Many of you knew him for his iconic white hair, signature ponytail and black sunglasses that complemented his every look. Born in Hamburg, Germany; never truly revealing his birthday, it's been reported that he was born on September 10, 1933. Being born as Karl Otto Lagerfeldt, he later on removed the "t" at the end of his last name in order to make it more "commercialized" quite early on in his career. Makes you wonder what else he's done in order to become who he is known for now.
As a child, he expressed great interest in caricatures, design and fashion. Even among his academic life/school years he was known for being critical of what others wore & his unique fashion sense. In interviews Karl had expressed how throughout his teen years many admired yet questioned his brave, bold sense of style & unique hair style choice to always keep it long, from having teachers demand he get a haircut (long story short Karl's mother was not having it). It wasn't until returning to Hamburg once again, that he completely immersed himself into the world of high fashion.
A fourteen year old Karl then made the bold decision to move to Paris, with his parents blessings he commenced his journey. After two years he entered a competition, where he won first place in the coat category and met, Yves Saint Laurent, who would then become a close friend along his career. Throughout the years Lagerfeld had worked full-time with French designer Pierre Balmain. He then worked as a creative director with other fashion houses until 1961, where he finally started going for it all. Lagerfeld's career was then going on headstrong, he designed collections for Fendi, Chloe and many others. He became known for his innovative, modern, in-the-moment designs/styles; even when being known for his fast modern designs his work never seemed to be considered fast fashion or such due to his appreciation for the past and the classic looks.
As the years passed by Karl Lagerfeld became a major star in the fashion world. Throughout the 1980's, he was a favorite among the press, who enjoyed eyeing his every move as to "What is Karl up to now?!". During the lifespan of his career he accomplished many things yet he did what many thought impossible...
Karl Lagerfeld brought Chanel back from the dead, not Coco Chanel but he returned what was thought to be a dying brand back to life. With his amazing runway sets beautifully designed to go along with the collection of the season, Karl never failed to impress, he made sure of it.
Fast forward to Karl Lagerfeld selling his label in 2005 to Tommy Hilfiger, which he launched around 1984, created around the concept of what he thought of as "intellectual sexiness". He always kept a busy schedule; from designing a line of glassware for a Swedish company "Orrefors" to signing with Macy's to create a new clothing collection. Karl was always up to something, in 2015 he opened the first ever Karl Lagerfeld store.
As the years passed by Karl Lagerfeld left many impressions on people whether they were good or bad, he still continued to work his love for the arts. Without letting anyone tell him otherwise he took a step forward to Paris and never looked back once. Making lifelong friends along the way, obtaining life lessons; either related to his career or personal he maintained a focus to be the very best along with his life companion, Choupette, his cat. Not only will he be known for his bold designs throughout the years but he will forever be remembered for his unique style & way of carrying himself among others. He will be greatly missed.
Ruhe in Frieden Karl Lagerfeld
